DPF Service

Another service in which we specialize at Adrenaline Diesel is the modification of diesel particulate filters (DPFs) in commercial trucks. Most diesel vehicles have a DPF that “filters soot and other particulates from engine exhaust,” as a measure that limits harmful emissions into the atmosphere.

A DPF service involves modifying the DPF to lower backpressure from clogs and allow fuel to flow freely through the engine. This can increase the number of miles per gallon (MPG) your truck gets as it burns through fuel, making it a more efficient vehicle. The DPF is an emission control measure that stops soot and toxic exhaust gases from escaping into the environment.

There are many shops that offer these services, but Adrenaline Diesel is one of a few shops in Canada with a proven track record of success in tuning your engine control module (ECM). Semi-truck ECM tuning is the process of “fine tuning the software program that controls your engine fuel management system, without having to replace any part.” After ECM tuning, your engine will receive more power, respond more efficiently and consume less fuel for the same performance.

What is an EGR Valve?

The exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve does just what it sounds like it does – recirculates exhaust fumes through the engine to improve the efficiency of your engine. When diesel is burned in the engine, there is often leftover fuel that wasn’t fully burned, which is then recirculated by the EGR valve to ensure that all possible fuel is being burned for optimized efficiency.

According to LiveAbout, “the EGR valve is vital to your car’s emission controls.” It also helps control the release of emissions into the atmosphere, which prevents “greenhouse gas build-up” and helps to keep the temperature of the atmosphere at a safe level.

While there are positives to having an EGR valve, there are drawbacks as well. When an EGR valve fails, it must be replaced which can drastically affect the engine’s performance and cause it to fail. Fortunately, you can clean it – and if that doesn’t work, you can replace the part.

Symptoms of a Bad EGR

If you suspect that your EGR valve has gone bad, there are a number of symptoms to watch for to make sure you don’t kill your engine and get stuck on the side of the highway when you have somewhere to be. Bad EGR valve symptoms can include engine performance issues like a reduction in power or fuel efficiency, stalling or hesitating during acceleration. You might also notice a rough idle, pinging or knocking sound during acceleration, a stuck valve cover or an activated check engine light.

EGR Valve Replacement Service

Is your mechanic telling you that your EGR valve needs replacing? Luckily for you (and your mechanic), cleaning an EGR valve isn’t too tough a job to complete. If you’ve had an exhaust and emission system inspection and it’s been determined that your EGR valve is failing, it’s time to try EGR valve cleaner before replacing the part.

When cleaning an EGR valve, you’ll notice carbon build-up on the walls of the valve that “can cause premature wear.” Your mechanic will have a set of rubber gloves, a bottle of EGR valve cleaner and a clean microfiber towel to do the job. They will then locate the EGR valve and remove the cover to gain access to it before starting the vehicle and revving the engine to 2000 repetitions per minute (RPMs). They will then spray 250ml of the cleaning solution into the EGR valve, with short one-second sprays so as not to “overwhelm the engine.” After reinstalling the EGR valve cover, your mechanic will scan the vehicle for error codes and run the vehicle to make sure everything is functioning properly.

If cleaning doesn’t do it for your truck, EGR valve replacement shouldn’t be too expensive, and it shou get your truck back on the road quickly and running smoothly! Replacing an EGR valve is a simple job that only requires a few basic hand tools, according to Advance Auto Parts. If you hire someone to do an EGR valve replacement, they’ll put the vehicle in park and apply the emergency brake before disconnecting the battery and fully discharging the system. After inspecting the hoses attached to the EGR valve for leaks, your mechanic will “remove the bolts holding the valve to the cylinder head,” remove the valve, gaskets and debris, and install the new EGR valve. Once all connections are reattached, they’ll check for error codes and test drive the vehicle to make sure it’s running smoothly again.
